The Gear Foundation was created to serve the Lesbian and Gay community of Cleveland, Ohio, through social, political, and cultural events, counseling and support groups, and to empower and raise the community's level of visibility. The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center was opened to serve as a base of operations for the Gear Foundation's activities. The first Center was located on the city's east side, and over the years relocated several times. In 1988, The Gear Foundation officially changed its name to The Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland. The Center has continued many of the Gear Foundation's activities while initiating many others, such as the Living Room Project to help support and nurture persons with AIDS. A Gay Youth Group has also been maintained by the Center, along with a Speakers Bureau and various entertainment and social events, including the yearly Lesbian-Gay Pride Day and march. In 2000, the Center was located at 1418 West 29th Street. The Foundation incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1975, and was given tax exempt status in 1978. Early activities included a Gay Hotline-Switchboard and the publication of High Gear, a monthly newspaper covering news and events of interest in the Gay community. The Gear Foundation served as an umbrella organization for other groups and activities, including a Rap Group and a Speaker's Bureau. In 1977, the Foundation opened the Lesbian-Gay Community Services Center, to serve as a base of operations for its activities. Throughout the 1980s, the Foundation continued to increase its visibility and help form a cohesive Lesbian-Gay community in northeast Ohio. A stronger feminist element was nurtured in the organization with committees such as Lesbians in Gear Hanging Together (LIGHT). The Foundation also became more involved in political activism and lobbying, legal issues, job discrimination, and anti-Gay violence. The Foundation also was active in fundraising, social, and educational services in the fight against AIDS, including an AIDS Hotline. Other AIDS-related work included involvement with the medical community, the Health Issues Task Force, the National Gay Task Force, and the NAMES Project. In 1988, the Gear Foundation officially changed its name to the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland, which has continued many of the Foundation's activities. The name Chevrei Tikva (Hebrew for "friends of hope") was chosen in Hovember 1983. Religious services were initially held in members' homes. From 1984-1989 the group met at The Civic, 3130 Mayfield Road, in Cleveland Heights. The congregation acquired its Torah scroll in 1986, and introduced varied programming, including Sabbath and holiday services, Passover seders, house dedications, and baby namings. In 1989 the congregation moved its services to the Unitarian Universalist Society of Cleveland, 2728 Lancashire Road, in Cleveland Heights, and also affiliated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which is the synagogue association of the Reform movement. In 2001 Rachel Rembrandt, a graduate of Hebrew Union College, became the congregations' first permanent rabbi. In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection includes personal files, consisting of resumes, calendars, correspondence, speeches and files re: fundraising and public relations; NOW files, consisting of local chapter files, Ohio NOW files, national NOW files, NOW ERA campaign files (hearings, press clippings and state campaign notebooks), and NOW publications; and, files pertaining to general women's issues, and events and organizations (such as abortion, day care, education, employment, International Women's Year, the Twenty-Second District Caucus, the Democratic National Conventions of 1980 and 1984). In 1992, he was a probation officer for the Cleveland Heights Municipal Court. Miller has been active in many socialist and political organizations since the late 1960s. He traveled to countries in Asia; including China, North Vietnam, and Laos; and to Nicaragua.
